Family Visit Visa

If you want to come to the UK as a family visitor you will need to apply for a family visit visa.

  In order to qualify as a family visitor you must be visiting at least one of the following:

  • the father, mother, brother or sister of your husband, wife or civil partner;
  • the husband, wife or civil partner of your son or daughter;
  • your stepfather, stepmother, stepson, stepdaughter, stepbrother or stepsister; or
  • a person who has lived with you as an unmarried couple for 2 of the 3 years before the day you apply for entry clearance.

The requirements for a family visit visa are:-

  • You must be aged over 18;

  • You must intend to visit the UK for a maximum of 6 months (unless you are accompanying an academic visitor in which case you can stay in the UK for 12 months);

  • You must intend to leave the UK at the end of your visit;

  • You must be able to afford the cost of your journey to and from the UK;

  • You must be able to support and accommodate yourself without recourse to public funds. It is acceptable that a family member or friend will support and accommodate you.

As a general visitor in the UK you must not:-

  • Take paid or unpaid work;

  • Do a course of study;

  • Give notice of a marriage or civil partnership or enter into a marriage or civil partnership;
